A male learner directing a member of the public to the correct area of the hospital, as part of a work placement

One Monday morning, as part of the duties of his work placement with the Maidstone Hospital reception team, Amaan was greeting and directing patients & visitors that came into the hospital’s main entrance.

Amaan was observed helping a Russian gentleman find his way to the Accident & Emergency Department. The gentleman could not speak English.

At The Oaks Specialist College, our learners are encouraged to use their mobile devices to find solutions to problems. Instinctively, Amaan prompted the gentleman to use Google Translate on his mobile device, so they could begin to understand each other.

This was successful and Amaan soon learned that the gentleman was looking for the Accident & Emergency department. Amaan escorted the gentleman to the correct section of the hospital, after informing the reception team what he was doing and where he was going.

Amaan showed amazing initiative and problem-solving skills to ensure perfect two-way communication between himself and the gentleman – demonstrating excellent customer service as a result. He achieved this with absolute independence.
